Northwest Montana and Flathead Valley attractions

Beautiful Northwest Montana holds an exciting array of attractions for visitors of every age and ability.

• Glacier National Park has been named the “Crown of the Continent” by the National Geographic Society. Rugged peaks, glacier-carved valleys, high waterfalls, clear lakes, colorful flowers, fishing, camping, wildlife, and outdoor adventure attract visitors from all over the world. Hikers can choose from 730 miles of hiking trails, from half-hour nature trails to week-long treks. Winter visitors can cross-country ski and snowshoe. Visitor centers and some trails are wheelchair-accessible.
• Downhill skiers can behold the splendor of the Flathead Valley as they schuss down the slopes at Whitefish Mountain Resort or Blacktail Mountain Ski Area. During the warmer months, both resorts offer hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as huckleberry-picking (a favorite with children!).
• Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. It’s also one of the world’s cleanest large lakes – ideal for swimming, fishing, sailing, kayaking, and boating. You can camp at any of the five lakeshore locations of Flathead Lake State Park. Wild Horse Island State Park , open for day use, offers hiking, wildlife viewing, and the historic remains of early 20th century homesteads.
• History buffs will want to visit the Conrad Mansion, which Kalispell’s founder, Charles E. Conrad, built for his family in 1895. See the original furnishings in the mansion’s 26 rooms. A few blocks away, learn about the Flathead Valley’s colorful history and characters at the Museum at Central School , built in 1894.
